The opening ceremony of NATO training exercise Trident Juncture 2015 took place at Trápani Air Force Base of the Italian Air Force located in Sicily, Italy on 19 October. Trident Juncture 2015 involves 36,000 personnel from more than 30 nations, and is taking place in Italy, Portugal, Spain, the Atlantic Ocean, the Mediterranean Sea and also Canada, Norway, Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands. German Army’s General Hans-Lothar Domröse, the Commander of NATO Joint Force Command Brunssum (JFCBS) is the conducting officer of the exercise.
Trident Juncture 2015 is the biggest NATO-exercise since Strong Resolve in 2002.
Its aim is to train and test the NATO Response Force (NRF) 16, a quick reaction force that can be deployed all around the world in a short time under the lead of Spain.
More than 12 major international organizations, aid agencies and non-governmental organizations contribute to Trident Juncture 2015.
Trident Juncture 2015 is separated into two parts, the command post exercise (CPX) and the live exercise (LIVEX). The CPX was held October 3-16 with the aim to provide operational level staff with training, evaluation and certification.
The LIVEX will be held from 21 October to 6 November. In this part, the trainees have to deal with the fictitious SOROTAN scenario.
At the conclusion of Trident Juncture 2015, the Headquarters Staff from JFCBS will be officially certified to lead the NATO NRF 16, if activated.
