German shipbuilder ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems (TKMS) has floated out the first of four HDW Class 209/1400 diesel-electric attack submarines intended for the Egyptian Navy on 10 December in Hamburg, Germany.
Egypt has purchased two submarines in 2011, and additional two were purchased in 2014.
The submarine is equipped with ISUS (Integrated Sensor Underwater System) family of combat management systems developed by German company ATLAS Elektronik (joint owned by TKMS and Airbus Defence and Space), as well as eight launchers for torpedoes and missiles. Atlas Elektronik currently proposes ISUS 50 series and ISUS 100 series.
The Egyptian Navy fleet is rapidly growing thanks to the acquisition of one FREMM combat frigate (FFG 1001 ENS Tahya Misr commissioned on 23 June 2015), four Gowind 2500 corvettes (with option for two more) and two landing helicopter docks (LHDs)from French shipbuilder DCNS.
