Spanish Navy Rear Admiral José Enrique Delgado Roig took command of Standing NATO Maritime Group One (SNMG1) on 18 December, during a ceremony held in Cartagena, Spain which was presided over by French Navy Vice Admiral Bruno Paulmier which is the Deputy Commander of NATO’s Allied Maritime Command.

Rear Admiral Delgado Roig received the command from Portuguese Navy Rear Admiral Alberto Manuel Silvestre Correia, while the new flagship, SPS Álvaro de Bazán (F101) conducted the operational handover with the previous flagship NRP D. Francisco de Almeida (F334).

During the Portuguese period of command, SNMG1 has participated in exercises CONTEX-PHIBEX, BREEZE, NORTHERN COASTS, JOINT WARRIOR and TRIDENT JUNCTURE 15, and has contributed to Operation ACTIVE ENDEAVOUR, NATO’s counter-terrorism operation in the Mediterranean, visiting nineteen ports on to 10 countries along the way.
