The Barbaros-class TCG Barbaros (F244) combat frigate of the Turkish Naval Forces Command (TNFC, or Türk Deniz Kuvvetleri Komutanlığı) was appointed to take part in the NATO mission on the Aegean Sea aimed at slowing irregular migration and combating human smuggling. The ship TCG Barbaros is currently part of Standing NATO Maritime Group 2 (SNMG2) naval force. SNMG2 arrived in the Aegean Sea to participate in national and international efforts to cut the lines of illegal trafficking and illegal migration in the area between Greece and Turkey.

Along TCG Barbaros, SNMG2 currently consists of German Navy flagship Berlin-class FGS Bonn (A1413), Royal Canadian Navy frigate Halifax-class HMCS Fredericton (337), and Greek Navy Hydra-class frigate HS Salamis (F455). The surface units are patrolling in the assigned areas and conducting reconnaissance, monitoring and surveillance activities. The crews are also performing drills.
