The French shipbuilder DCNS transferred June 2 the first of two BPC (Bâtiment de Projection et de Commandement) multirole amphibious ships to the Egyptian Navy. The ship, ENS Gamal Abdel Nasser was built by French shipbuilder STX France.
The two ships were originally aimed for the Russian Navy, as they were acquired by Russia in June 2011. Both were purchased October 2015 by Egypt, after the deal with Russia was canceled. The deal with Egypt also included training and delivery of DCNS CTM NG and CNIM L-Cat landing boats.
