The Defence Acquisition Council (DAC) of India has cleared the purchase of 145 of the M777A2 light 155mm towed howitzer to BAE Systems. The deal to be run through the US foreign military sales program will see the assembling of 120 guns in India by BAE Systems and Mahindra Defence Systems (MDS).
The M777A2 artillery system includes a 52-caliber ordnance, inertial navigation and pointing system and muzzle velocity radar. It is in service with the US, Canada and Australia.
The DAC also cleared the production of 18 Dhanush 45-caliber 155mm towed artillery guns to be produced in India by state-owned company Ordnance Factory Board (OFB).
