The Finish Ministry of Defence announced it will enter government-to-government negotiations with Republic of Korea with the aim to purchase of undisclosed quantities of the Hanwha Techwin K9 Thunder 155 mm/52-calibre self-propelled tracked armoured howitzer. No further details were delivered. However the future contract is likely to include training, ammunition, spares and logistics support, and eventually Hanwha Techwin K10 tracked armoured ammunition resupply vehicles.
The K9 Thunder is currently fielded by the Republic of Korea Army, and by Turkish Land Forces Command. In Turkey, the system was locally produced by MKEK (Makina ve Kimya Endüstrisi Kurumu) under the designation of T-155 K/M Firtina. More than 300 units of the 47-tons T-155 K/M Firtina howitzer were produced by MKEK. The company also is producing the Poyraz ammunition resupply vehicle.
K9 Thunder was selected by Poland (chassis) and India, and is being considered by Norway and Denmark.
