The Portuguese Navy is to acquire new batteries for its two ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems (TKMS) 209PN attack submarines. A tender to procure two main batteries will close on 3 August.

Proposals were delivered by Systems Sunlight and EXIDE Technologies. Batteries currently fitted to the Tridente-class submarines are of Systems Sunlight origin.

The two AIP-powered submarines NRP Tridente (S160) and NRP Arpão (S161) were commissioned June and December 2010 respectively after they were acquired April 2004. They are armed with Leonardo Black Sharck heavyweight torpedoes and Boeing UGM-84L Sub-Harpoon anti-ship/land attack missiles.
