The European Organisation for Joint Armament Cooperation (OCCAR) and the Lithuanian Ministry of Defence have commissioned ARTEC GmbH (a joint venture between Germany’s Krauss-Maffei Wegmann and Rheinmetall Defence) to supply GTK Boxer 8×8 armored infantry fighting vehicles to the Lithuanian Army. The contract signed 22 August and worth around EUR390 million will see the delivery of 88 vehicles from 2017 to 2021. The Lithuanian Army will call the vehicle the Vilkas, which means ‘wolf’.
The fleet will be equipped with Rafael Advanced Defense Systems Samson Mk2 remote-controlled weapon station armed with 30mm automatic cannon.
53 vehicles will be manufactured by Krauss-Maffei Wegmann and 35 by Rheinmetall Defence. GTK Boxer is currently fielded by Germany and the Netherlands.
