At EURONVAL 2016 naval technologies trade show, Thales Underwater Systems is launching the CAPTAS-4 Compact towed array sonar, which provides frigates with an anti-submarine warfare (ASW) capability to support collaborative combat at sea.

The new product is a compact, modular version of the CAPTAS-4 four ring sonar. It requires less room on board the vessel.

The new sonar system delivers the same detection performance as CAPTAS-4 with 20% weight reduction and a 50% smaller footprint. In addition, the compact version can be containerized.

Thales is proposing to supply the CAPTAS-4 Compact sonar to the French Navy under the FTI (Frégate de Taille Intermédiaire) 4200t frigate programme, which call for the acquisition of five units to gradually replace the ships of La Fayette-class. The first ship is scheduled to enter service in 2023.
