The Defence Acquisition Council (DAC) of India has approved the acquisition from the US operation of BAE Systems of 145 M777A2 lightweight towed howitzers through the US Foreign Military Sales (FMS) program.

Most of the weapon systems will be assembled in in India in partnership with the local privately-run sector company Mahindra Defence Systems. It is understood that Leonardo LINAPS navigation and pointing system is part of the deal.

The M777A2 is currently fielded by the U.S., Canada and Australia.
