During the BID Brasil 2016 exhibition held in Brasília, Brazil between 27 and 29 September, Swedish SAAB Aeronautics has displayed a 1:1 mock-up of Gripen NG fighter jet fitted with two wing-mounted carriages, each armed with four of the Boeing GBU-39/B SDB I (Small Diameter Bomb I) extended-range air-launched air-to-surface guided weapon.
The GBU-39/B SDB I airborne low-cost low-weight small-size smart weapon is fitted with an advanced anti-jam global positioning system aided inertial navigation system to provide precise guidance to the coordinates of a ground-based stationary target.
The Brazilian Air Force (Força Aérea Brasileira or FAB) will receive 36 Gripen E/F fighter jets to be fielded from Anápolis air base from 2018. The combat aircraft is locally designated as F-39 Gripen. The aircraft mock-up also was seen armed with A-Darter and Meteor air-to-air missiles.
It is not known if the GBU-39/B SDB I was acquired by Brazil. Users of the 250 lb and 1.75 m precision weapon include the U.S., Australia and Israel.
