Thales has signed a design and pre-production contract to upgrade sonar systems of Royal Australia Navy’s six Collins-class attack submarine sonar systems.

Thales will utilise some of the latest developments in underwater sensing to replace the sonar arrays, which have not been upgraded since first entering service in the mid-1990s.

The legacy cylindrical array will be replaced with a modular cylindrical array based on submarine technology. The existing flank array will be replaced by latest generation flank array technology.

Sonartech Atlas and L3 Oceania will partner with Thales to upgrade the sonar system.

The upgrade program follows the company’s 2012 contract with the Department of Defence to update the Collins-class’ on-board sonar hardware and electronics.
