The Lithuanian Ministry of Defence announced it signed a deal with the German Ministry of Defence to acquire 168 M577 tracked armored carriers. The fleet will be commissioned by the Lithuanian Land Force between 2017 and 2018 along with spare parts, maintenance tools and other associated equipment.

Lithuania is purchasing command, indirect fire support, medical evacuation and training variants of the M577 carriers, the country’s military authorities said.

The M577 is the command post version of M113 family of vehicles. However some users field the type for other roles. The vehicles for Lithuania will be made available by the Germany Army though the German Ministry of Defence’s armament management agency, the Bundesamt für Ausrüstung, Informationstechnik und Nutzung der Bundeswehr (BAAINBw).

It is not known if the fleet will be refurbished and upgraded by German defence industry prior delivery to Lithuania. Several vehicles of the M113
