MBDA is presenting its new SmartGlider family of guided weapons at the Paris Air Show 2017 event. SmartGlider air-to-ground weapon was designed to counter new networked short- and medium-range surface-to-air threats, as well as moving/re-locatable targets or hardened fixed targets.
Planned to become available for fast jets no later than 2025, SmartGlider forms a family of all-up-round glider weapons, with folding wings and a range of over 100 km. The compact SmartGlider Light is 2 m long and weighs 120 kg. 12 to 18 SmartGlider Light weapons can be carried on an aircraft thanks to a hexabomb smart launcher.
MBDA also prepares the 1,300 kg SmartGlider Heavy version which will be able to carry a multi-purpose warhead of more than 1,000 kg to deal with large and hardened infrastructure.
