The Maintenance, Modifications & Upgrades unit of Boeing Defense, Space & Security has received a US$61 Million order from the U.S. Air Force (USAF) for two more C-130 Avionics Modernization Program (AMP) upgrade kits.

This is the second USAF contract in three months that approves the purchase of more AMP kits for the Lockheed Martin C-130 Hercules transport aircraft. In December, an Acquisition Decision Memorandum authorized the LRIP program to increase from 20 to 26 aircraft.

The AMP is one of the solutions being considered by Portugal to upgrade the six C-130H (three C-130H and three C-130H-30) aircraft operated by Portuguese Air Force Squadron 501 “Bisontes” which is located at Montijo Air Base Nº6.

Companies who have solutions available to upgrade the avionics of C-130s include Marshall Aerospace Ltd, ELBIT Systems Ltd, L-3 Communications MAS, Boeing, Esterline CMC Electronics and Thales Avionics. The Brazilian Air Force C-130 aircraft have been upgraded with Thales Avionics Topdeck solution.
